06/08/2004 - Me, Myself and Logan
[BACK]

I am experiencing horrible internet problems. I am pretty sure that silly brainless kitten pulled my modem onto the floor one too many times. I don't hear any modem noise (dialing), and I keep getting the error that the number is busy. I called the number using my phone, and not only is it not busy, but that signal is annoying. You could torture prisoners with a computer signal over a phone line.

So, here I am at the public library trying to organize some thoughts amidst children that don't seem to have any more self-control or common sense than the silly kitten. And, why should they? We've seen their parents. There's no common sense being learned from them.

In Hollywood news, I recently found out that yet another one of my ideas is being put to use by someone else. I've mentioned before that two of my four ideal remakes have been made (Planet of the Apes and 12 Angry Men), and now #3 looks like it will see the screen once again. After many, many years of on-again off-again rumors, Brian Singer has signed on to direct the remake of Logan's Run. I love Brian's work on the X-Men, so I'm sure I will love this movie, but it does get disheartening when you put a lot of work into something (I have a completed script for this one) and you may as well throw all that work in the garbage.

Brian's version will set the cut-off age back to 21(in the movie, it was 30, and I believe it was 18 in the book). Supposedly, the focus will be on the society in which children make all the rules and govern themselves and each other, and no one really stays around long enough to learn anything substantial or help society progress. I never bought into this concept. Maybe back in the 70's we could see the remote possibility of this working, but in today's culture where we see all the problems of children raising children, we know that this is an impossibility on a society level. My script focused more on the conspiracy of the governing body manipulating its people - and the people manipulating each other - to the point where they would actually willingly submit themselves to a death chamber simply because that is what their society does.

Leonardo di Caprio has long been considered the logical choice to play Logan, but he is far from passing for under 21 (he will turn 30 later this year). I kept the age at 30, and chose Heath Ledgar for my Logan. Francis, his former partner who was now hunting him in order to preserve the status quo, would be played by Jude Law, and for the role of the beautiful Jessica, I envisioned Smallville's Kristin Kreuk. Try to picture her in that waterfall scene. Brooke Burns, the new Farrah Fawcett, would play Holly, and that's only because Jessica Simpson has already signed on to play Daisy Duke. I have no idea who will actually play these parts - I'm just unloading as a method of catharsis. Since we have to think young, and filming will take a year or so, I'm thinking that the little kid who plays Dewey on Malcolm in the Middle could play Logan, and the younger brother from Joan of Arcadia could play Francis. The Olsen Twins could play Jessica, and Box would be Bernie Mac.

So, it's back to the drawing board... er, typing board. What am I going to do - get a real job? Please.
