When in doubt go to your own experiences to help create your characters.
You can make stuff up to add dimension to your characters or you can transfer your observations of others, but sometimes by going within yourself and finding areas of your personality you can add shadings and contours to your creations.
The goal is to tell your stories through the trials and tribulations of recognizable human beings. To give your characters help, sometimes it's necessary to pluck parts of yourself and pass them on to your characters.
A little neurosis or two always give weight. A goofy phobia. A mild obsession. And don't forget those funny little habits you have that make you unique.
When you're having trouble defining a character, check out the person you know best: yourself. |
