11/10/2004 - GIVING INFORMATION
[BACK]

You need to get some crucial information across to your audience, but the nature of your plot is such that you have to be either subtle or shrewd in doing so.

The old-fashioned method of giving information was a conversation between two minor characters, usually on the periphery of the story, but who possess crucial facts that the audience needs to know. For example, the doorman and concierge of a condo might have a chat in which they reveal important information about the main character you lives in the building.

In the world of television, there is The Ear or the person your main character talks to or listens to. This can be the best friend, the sibling, the neighbor or co-worker who is always available to help move a plot.

Sometimes the best way to give the audience information is to simply show a character doing something. If you need to let us know that your lead character can't cook this can be done simply by putting her in a situation where she must cook. By observing her struggling in the kitchen, burning either herself or a frying pan and not knowing how to properly chop vegetables you can give your audience an accurate portrait of her fast.

Remember also to give as much important information to your audience as early as possible. We'll be patient at the start and won't mind waiting not knowing too much, but as the story progresses, we'll be less tolerant if we don't now what's going on.
