The first week of January is usually the deadest time of the year in Hollywood. The buyers and players are still on vacation or closing the books on the last year or preparing for their time at Sundance.
Screenplays tend not to be bought this first week. I've always felt that knowing nobody or very few people were making deals was a break for screenwriters. Most of the serious screenwriters I know are constantly writing, rewriting, getting a script out, then starting a new one while hoping that the script the just finished (along with the last one the just finished) might result in some kind of action.
If you're seriously pursuing a screenwriting career you're pretty much always hustling (except during your slumps). Each week that goes by without getting a deal puts more pressure on you. So as each year ends and a new year begins there's an odd kind of comfort in knowing that not only are you not getting a deal, but nobody else is either.
The first week in January becomes quiet time. You can look back at what you accomplished, then look ahead and start figuring out what your game plan is for the new year.
Try it. Relax. Chill. It might be just what you need. |
