In "Adventures In The Screen Trade" William Goldman says to get the star in early. (If you haven't read it, do so. He wrote it more than 20 years ago and it's as relevant today as it was then)
What he means is don't have all kinds of stuff happening in your script for too many pages without introducing your main character.
Even if you're writing a small film or a script that you're going to make yourself, it's advisable to introduce your protagonist ASAP.
How late is too late to introduce your main character? If you can't do it on Page 1, shoot for Page 3. If it's Page 5 you've gone too far.
Not to be too anal here, but let's aim for the middle of Page 4.
