Sometimes the person you THINK is your main character isn't. Instead, it's the person you initially thought would be your protagonist's best friend, roomate, co-worker and brother.
You didn't mean to do it, but you somehow made this other guy more interesting. He has all the best lines, he's a more compelling personality, more fun, more likable and you find yourself breezing through his lines and realizing that it's the best dialogue you've ever written.
Meanwhile, the guy you THOUGHT was your main character just sort of lies there on the page one dimensional, bland and uttering words that are phoney and hackneyed.
All this means is that you have to seize this opportunity by the horns and make it work for you. If you love your character, so will we. If you're enthusiastic about your character and the story you've wrapped around him, so will we.
Don't be depressed when your initial "hero" is superceded by somebody else. Grab onto the opportunity and go for it. |
