This is one of those problems that come along when a producer wants to hire you to write a project, either an original idea of his or to rewrite someone else's work.
Because they're coming to you, they will have money. The opportunity to make money as a screenwriter is a lifechanging experience. If it's your first paid assignment you're on cloud nine. You're so happy somebody wants to hire you (most likely because they've read a writing sample of yours) that you'll say "Yes, yes, yes" no matter how paltry the fee.
Nevertheless, after the joy of learning that someone wants to hire you to either rewrite something or write something from their idea, reality sets in when you realize that you are totally unable to relate to the material. You have zero knowledge of the subject. You don't know anyone who does. You're not even sure what the subject is. Or you know a little about it and you hate it.
But if you need the money (and you most likely will) and you need the credit (and you most likely will), you're going to say yes.
This is, as they say, a slippery slope. It's kind of like marrying a woman you don't love, don't like and on top of that she's ugly and beats you. But you marry her because you need the money.
Taking this kind of writing assignment, no matter how much you need the money and credit, can turn into a nightmare.
But as long as you know you'll probably be in for that nightmare, the experience will be less painful. It's the type of project you just want to get through, hopefully with your money and your credit.
