07/20/2005 - AVOIDING THE INVEVITABLE
[BACK]

Deciding to abandon a screenplay before you've finished it is like ending a relationship before it's gotten too serious. A part of you wants make it work, but in your heart you know you're just going through the motions.

With regard to a script, you figured you've already put several weeks into it. Or months. Maybe you've even been toying with it for a couple of years, but only managing to churn out an Act, if that. You've started and stopped on the thing so many times you've lost count. You've gotten other ideas that you started, but when those didn't get off the ground, you went back to this one thing that's been gnawing away at you.

Finally, you get to a point where you know it's never gonna get finished and like that relationship that has lost all it's joy for you, you decide to abandon the project, probably forever.

Note: I said probably, but think of that as leaving only a crack in the window. Maybe you'll go back one day.

But you probably won't.

And it's OK. Sticktoitiveness is a wonderful quality, but there must come a time when you have to move on.
