Get Help With Your Story
by Howie Meibach

Use whatever you have to in order to make your story or characters more interesting. Remember the character trait that Morgan Freeman displayed in MILLION DOLLAR BABY (Paul Haggis, script, F.X. Toole, story) when he explained why he didn't wear socks? The reason was because they would only get holes in them. Well, you know who else in real life said this? Albert Einstein! Sure, the writer of MDB could have made it up, but we doubt it. It doesn't really matter though. Our point is that you as writers, must train yourselves so that when you come across something like this, a light bulb goes off in your head and you say to yourself, "I can use that." If it doesn't work for the story you're currently writing, perhaps it will work for the next one. Just so you don't forget about it, write it down or tape it. This is why it's so important to carry a pad or tape recorder all the time. Life is there for you to glean from.
