All dialogue in a screenplay should serve a purpose. It might be used for character development or it might give us information needed to propel the story forward. One thing it should never be used for is filler. If your script is coming in at 85 pages, you need more story not more dialogue. Adding dialogue just to have chit chat is a big no no. A conversation between characters must reveal something whether it's about the characters or about the story. Go through your script and make sure that your dialogue is working for you. So if Billy is telling Mary about the weather, it better be there to reveal something about Billy like he's obsessed with the weather or it better be there to tell us that perhaps a catastrophic storm is approaching. Dialogue in a screenplay without a purpose is a sure sign of a non pro and that's a sure way of getting your script tossed before it's read up to page 20.
